I'll get downvoted for this but Sonic Adventure 2: Battle was honestly the last great Sonic game made. Instead of going back to their roots, they should have improved upon the series. To this day I still want Sonic Adventure 3.

Sonic Mania is the greatest Sonic game ever made, and that was fairly recent. Sonic Origins will be awesome when it comes out in a month (it's from the same team as Mania, so no worries there).

3D Sonic games, though? You might be right. Generations is close to that level, but there's a lot less to do in that game.

The gameplay is pretty great, it’s plagued with the classic issue from that time where the camera just kinda says “fuck you,” sometimes. And the story is WIIIIIIILD. I don’t know who wrote it, but they blow up half the moon and Sonic and Tails intercept the President’s motorcade. Good stuff
